My biggest issue with this piece is that I saw the Cursed Child in London, I didn’t just read the book. While I’ll admit the book itself is not a strong read, the show is four hours of absolute magic and spectacle and not limited to what the book lacks.
So it’s questionable why these producers felt the need to re-make the show in their vision and dig at a truly amazing show because the book they read didn’t meet their fan expectations. I find it disappointing they are making money on this and calling it a “satire” when they use most of the characters and story ideas from the original and just throw some digs in at the Cursed Child.
They could have made a true fan-original piece about where the story goes, not just take and twist someone else’s hard work because they didn’t agree with it.
On it’s own, it’s a nice piece with flare and wonderful acting and has enough magic that can happen without London and Broadway money behind it. I just wish they hadn’t done the angry-fan thing and instead made something that was their own idea out of love of the characters and world.
Maybe this is just where fandom is going – if you don’t like it, you have the right to re-write it as you see fit? Imagine being the original author.
My overall impression
Overall, the cast was truly excellent and gave it their all and the production design was quite awesome.
