What I liked

The transitions were smooth and interesting, the humorous moments well-delivered, and the more tender and vulnerable scenes acted deftly. I felt fully invested in the outcome of these character’s struggle and it sat with me for a while after the bows. Fringe veteran Frannie Morrison shone as June, playing what could become a vapid manic-pixie-dreamgirl with heart and subtext.

What I didn't like

I saw the opening performance of the show and there were one or two little awkward moments that occur in live theatre, but nothing notable. I would recommend sitting in the 2nd row or further back as the stage encroaches into the 1st row of seats a little.

My overall impression

If you enjoyed 2007’s ‘Once’, then you need to see this show. It is a heart-wrenching, fast-moving drama with live acoustic musical breaks by the main character peppered throughout. The plot follows Matt, a relatively well-known indie-rock singer-songwriter, his new love interest June, and Matt’s manager/best friend Harley. The writing is witty and thoughtful, the music is beautiful and sweet, and the story is a classic tale of boy-meets-girl with an unexpected obstacle thrown into the mix. Watching these capable actors bring it to life was funny and moving- I would definitely recommend it.
