The overall relationships between each of the 4 characters is very clear and quite impressive. The chemistry between the three leads Maty, Tyler and Jeremy is entertaining to watch. Tyler as Easton is charming while still being an a-hole, Maty is spot on as Zoey (determined yet vulnerable), and Jeremy as Fairchild is straight to the point no nonsense and even provides one of the biggest laughs of the night by… I won’t spoil it :) I also really enjoyed the role that the narrator/sports announcer plays throughout this piece by setting the stage as well as the world that it is set in.
What I didn't like
I found myself wondering a couple times what time period was this story taking place, and water poured directly on the stage always scares me as an audience member (but it was so funny when it happened!) The posted 75 minute run time is misleading. The show is under 60 minutes, so when people are going from show to show that extra 15 minutes could unfortunately deter some from seeing this show. (which would be a mistake)
My overall impression
Fight or Flight is a charming play about perseverance with lots and lots of heart. I was very impressed by this small cast of 4. From the retired too soon boxing phenom, his straight to the point manager, to the female boxing student who comes in to win our hearts, to the sports announcer/narrator who weaves this story together, everyone did an absolutely lovely job. I was intrigued and wanted to know more as the play continued, and that’s what you want to see when you see theatre! It’s also really bold/impressive that these theatre peeps literally just hopped in a car, drove half the country to participate in the HFF19, and crushed it. If you want to see a well rounded show with heart in under 60 minutes this is your show!
